For upland game hunting like quail, pheasant, and grouse you should pick up some fiocchi golden pheasant 20 gauge. The sx3 is widely used by bird hunters and clay shooters across the states. I currently shoot a single shot.410 for most of my grouse hunting trips, but sometimes the 12 gauage comes out to play.
A modified choke with 4's or good 5's will be great. It will see limited use for dove/grouse/quail. Seldom get a second shot on them in most coverts.
1 1/2c x 2 1/4h weight: Grouse specific guns don't have to cost alot, just be light and quick to point and to carry all day, and to be choked correctly. For what it's worth, it don't matter to the birds.
Growing up i had always used a 20 gauge remington 870 youth model for every kind of hunting. Favorite load was 7/8 oz #9 early season and 1 oz of # 7 1/2 toward the end. For grouse and woodcock, 16, 20, & 28 gauge are more than enough for clean kills at the range you will be shooting at grouse.
I bought one in 28 gauge five years ago for my wife and it has served her well. It was a nice little gun, and for someone in their early teens it simply didn’t make any sense to buy anything else. Who said grouse are tough?

They are definately good for grouse and many prefer a 20 because depneding on barrell length they are usually lighter and guick on target. This year will be the first year for me hunting quail and grouse.
